Scott Joplin, Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington.
Introduction
The only true American genre of music is jazz. It was born in New Orleans in the early 1900's developing from a combination slave work songs, spirituals, blues, brass band music, and ragtime. African Americans created jazz and were the innovators for many decades later.
Task
You are a disc jockey at the jazz radio station in your town. You have been given the assignment during Jazz History Month to do a radio show about one of the major contributors of jazz: Scott Joplin, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, or another of your choosing that is approved by Mrs. Keaster. As part of your radio show, you are to gather information about:
- Style of jazz at the time he was performing/composing
- His contributions to jazz
- The kinds of ensembles that he played
- The instruments in his ensemble
- Play samples of his pieces
- Information about some of his contemporaries.
Process
- Supplies needed: note taking guides from class, paper, pencil or pen, flash drive or other device.
- Select one of the musicians from below to begin a quest or you may select another one that is approved by Mrs. Keaster.
- You will use the web sites listed below to help you gather additional information about your musician whom you have been introduced to in class.
- You should have more information in your radio show than just what was discussed in class.
- You need to have what you are going to say written out so that it flows well.
- You are to record your radio show on a phone, iPad, or other device.
- Presentations of the radio shows will begin on Monday, December 5th.
- A final test over the notes taken in class and from the different radio shows will be taken on Friday, December 9th.
